With Trix’s hand in mine and her shiny new gun in its case in her bag, we approached the counter. The man at the counter, who I met yesterday, eyes light up with recognition as he looks between me and Trix.

“Hey, good to see you again. By the looks of things your lady is OK with her early Christmas present.” He chuckles to himself as he places his hands on the glass counter in front of him. I look down noticing all the different styles of knives and handgun accessories all in a row. Behind him are various semi-automatic weapons from shotguns to AK-47s. Why people feel the need to own such things is beyond me. Especially if you are not a member of law enforcement and work with these weapons every day. Even still, some cops I work with can barely handle such things or they don’t deserve to. I’ve seen enough mistakes made to last me a lifetime, but I guess the law is the law, no matter how much I disagree.

“The jury is still out on whether the lady is OK with her Christmas gift,” Trix states as she too looks down into the glass cases, not really looking at anything particular but I can tell she is a bit overwhelmed with all of this.

“Well, it doesn’t hurt to be prepared for any eventuality. Learning to shoot and protect yourself is number one on my list. By the time my daughters were ten they could shoot any gun behind me with ease.” The man, whose name is Frank, beams with pride, and I cringe at his words. Why can’t we just let children be children without forcing our own views of the world onto them. I don’t ever recall wanting to learn to shoot a gun as one of my childhood ambitious. I shake my head, keeping my mouth closed. I don’t want to upset the man and I actually want Trix to get a chance to use her gift.

“So, we just need a booth for two hours max,” I cut in before he could say anymore to Trix. She squeezes my hand in thanks and Frank nods and gets right down to business.

“Considering it’s two days before Christmas, it’s practically empty today so choose any stall you like. If you want to try another type of gun, I have a few that you can use already set up back there. You’ve already paid me for your time, we’ve gone through the safety protocols, and we can grab the safety gear once we are there, so let’s mosey on through those double doors and get you guys set up.” Frank points to the door and pushes a button to unlock the doors. He moves from behind the counter as another attendant appears from behind another curtain as if on cue to man the front. I pull Trix along with me, nodding my head in thanks to Frank as we follow him through the door and into an antechamber between the front of the store and the actual shooting booths.
